What It Actually Means to Follow Jesus

Most people who call themselves Christians can point to a moment. A prayer at camp. An aisle they walked. A youth group decision. And then life kept moving and the faith stopped. This message names that pattern honestly and offers something better. Valor Church is an expository, Bible-teaching church in northwest Arvada, Colorado, serving Westminster, Broomfield, Five Parks, and Candelas. Sundays at 10am at Excel Academy, 11500 W 84th Ave.

The anchor text is Mark 1:14-18. Jesus shows up in Galilee preaching the good news of God and says two things back to back. Repent and believe. Follow me. The two are not separate moves. They are one motion. The Greek word for disciple, mathetes, means learner. In the first century, a disciple left home, profession, and family to walk with a rabbi and absorb his entire way of life. Jesus is not asking for a signature on a card. He is asking for an apprenticeship.

The sermon walks through two simple frames. First, the four core truths of the gospel: God is our Father, sin is our problem, Jesus is our solution, faith is our response. These are not just for the day you got saved. They are a daily lens for every situation. Second, the four chambers of a disciple’s heart at Valor: follows Christ, matures in faith, pursues mission, surrenders for Christ. Each one is a real place to grow.

Here is the honest line of the message. If following Jesus has never cost you anything, you are probably not following him. You are living safely. A resilient disciple is not someone who has it all figured out. It is someone who keeps showing up, keeps repenting, keeps walking. If you have drifted, today is a good day to come back. Jesus opens his ministry with two words: repent and believe. Repent means turn away from your old life. Believe means trust him fully. They are not two steps. They are one motion. Before you do anything else today, ask the Lord where you need to turn and where you need to trust.

Follow Me

Mark 1:17

Simon and Andrew dropped their nets immediately. The nets were their livelihood, their identity, their plan. Following Jesus means letting go of the version of life you built without him. What net is still in your hand today?

Lord, give me the courage to drop what I am holding and follow you.

DAY 3

God Is Our Father

Romans 1:20

Everything starts here. God created you for his glory. He is not one option among many. He is the boss, the King, the source. When you remember who he is, the size of your problems gets right-sized fast.

Father, I acknowledge you as the start of everything in my day.

DAY 4

Sin Is Our Problem

Romans 3:23

We do not like this part. We want to be all-stars. But every honest look in the mirror says we have a problem we cannot fix. Naming sin is not the end of hope. It is the doorway to the gospel.

Lord, give me the honesty to name my sin without shame and without excuses.

DAY 5

Jesus Is Our Solution

Romans 5:8

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He lived perfectly, died sacrificially, rose victoriously. The guilt you cannot pay was paid in full. You receive it by faith, not by performance.

Jesus, thank you for paying what I could never pay.

DAY 6

Apply the Gospel Today

1 Corinthians 15:1-2

Paul says the gospel is what you received, what you stand on, and what you are being saved by. Try this sentence today: God is _____. Yet I _____. But Jesus _____. So today, therefore, I will _____. That is how the gospel meets you in real life.

Lord, let the gospel be the lens I see today through.

DAY 7

Counted the Cost

Luke 9:23

Jesus said if anyone would follow him, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily. Following him costs something. If it has never cost you anything, you may not be following yet. Ask honestly today: what has obeying Jesus actually cost me?

Lord, make me willing to pay the price of walking with you.

There is no formula, but the Bible is clear on the components. Acknowledge that God is your Creator and King. Admit that sin has separated you from him.
