Do I Really Need to Go to Church?
There are better preachers on your phone than the one you would hear in person. Better music. Better coffee, better parking, and nobody wrangling kids into a car. So what is the actual argument for showing up? This message gives one, and it is not guilt.
Do I Really Need to Go to Church? An Honest Answer
Start with the honest version of the question. You can stream a better sermon than most churches will preach live. You can find better music. You can stay home with your own coffee, in a more comfortable chair, without getting anyone dressed. If church is content delivery, streaming wins on every measure and you should stop feeling bad about it. The case for showing up has to be something streaming cannot do, or there is no case.
Mark 3 is where Jesus makes it. He is teaching, someone interrupts to say his mother and brothers are outside, and he looks around the room and says whoever does the will of God is his brother and sister and mother. That is not a warm metaphor. It is a claim that a spiritual family exists and that it runs deeper than blood. The New Testament will not let go of the idea: a spirit of adoption in Romans 8, members of God’s household in Ephesians 2, the household of God in 1 Timothy 3. The Greek word behind church, ekklesia, never meant a building. It meant an assembly of people called together.
The message works through three things this family does. It is supernatural, because the koinonia of the Holy Spirit in 2 Corinthians 13 is a shared life God creates rather than one we manufacture. It forms you, because Ephesians 4 says the body is knit together by every supporting ligament and grows as each part does its work. And it stays, which is the part that costs something: serving, showing up in the foxhole, mourning with people whose grief is inconvenient to your calendar.
This one is personal for the preacher. Justin was raised by his grandmother, without a mom and dad in the picture, and the churches he was part of became the place he learned how to be a husband and a father. He moved to Colorado in 2020 with no family within a thousand miles. So when he says the goal is to move from the church I attend to the family I belong to, he is describing something he needed first. Ask the Honest Version
Hebrews 10:24-25
If church were only a message and some songs, your phone would beat it every week and the guilt people feel about missing would be misplaced. Hebrews does not argue attendance for its own sake. It argues that we are there to provoke one another toward love and good works, which is not a thing a screen does to you. Ask what you would actually lose. Be honest about the answer.
Prayer
God, show me what I am really missing, not what I am supposed to say I miss.
Deeper Than Blood
Mark 3:31-35
Jesus was told his mother and brothers were waiting outside, and he looked at the people in the room and redefined family around doing the will of God. Read that slowly, because it is a startling thing to say about your own mother. It means the person two rows over is not a fellow attendee. Scripture calls them your brother, and it means it.
Prayer
Jesus, help me see the people around me the way you named them.
You Were Adopted Into This
Romans 8:15-17
Paul says you received a spirit of adoption, which means nobody here got in by pedigree. Everyone was brought in. That has a practical consequence: there is no inner circle you missed, and no seniority that outranks you. If you have felt like a guest in a room you technically belong to, this verse is the correction.
Prayer
Father, thank you that I was adopted. Help me stop standing at the edge.
Every Supporting Ligament
Ephesians 4:11-16
Paul’s picture is a body held together by joints, each part doing its work. It is an unglamorous image on purpose. Ligaments get no attention until one fails. Your part probably will not be visible and that is not a demotion. Ask what would quietly stop working in your church if you disappeared for six months.
Prayer
Lord, show me the unglamorous thing that is mine to do.
Shared Life, Not Manufactured
2 Corinthians 13:14
The word is koinonia, a shared life. Paul does not say try harder to feel close to these people. He calls it the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, which means God is the one producing it. That takes the pressure off manufacturing chemistry with everyone. It also means avoiding people is not a personality trait, it is opting out of something God is doing.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, produce in me what I cannot manufacture with these people.
The Family That Stays
Romans 12:15
Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. The first half is easy and the second half is where most of us leave. Staying means showing up for grief that is inconvenient, for the hospital visit that ruins a Saturday, for the person whose season has gone on longer than anyone’s patience. That is the part streaming cannot do.
Prayer
God, make me someone who stays when it stops being convenient.
Attend or Belong
1 Timothy 3:14-15
Paul calls the church the household of God. Household, not audience. There is a real difference between the church I go to and the family I belong to, and you can usually tell which one you are in by whether anyone would notice your absence. If the honest answer is that nobody would, that is fixable, and the fix starts with you telling one person your name.
Prayer
Lord, move me from attending to belonging. Show me the first step.

- Would anyone notice if you disappeared for six weeks? What does that answer tell you?
- Jesus redefined family around doing the will of God. Who in your church has actually functioned as family to you?
- Where are you consuming church rather than belonging to it?
- Ephesians 4 says the body grows as each part works. What is your part, and are you doing it?
- Have you been hurt by a church? Name what happened, and name what you have concluded about all churches because of it.
- Who could you invite into your home in the next month? Pick a name.
