Church Unstoppable
A coffee shop with lines out the door that refuses to brew another pot. That is what a church looks like when it forgets the kingdom. This message opens Luke 10 and unpacks what it actually means to be commissioned, not just attending.
Move From Consumer to Commissioned
Most Christians have quietly settled into a private faith. Show up on Sunday, find your seat, get something out of the service, go home. Jesus never offered that deal. He sent the 72 out two by two with a message and a mission, and the same call lands on every believer who claims his name. Valor Church is an expository, Bible-teaching church in northwest Arvada, Colorado, serving Westminster, Broomfield, Five Parks, and Candelas. Sundays at 10am at Excel Academy, 11500 W 84th Ave.
The text is Luke 10:1-12, the sending of the 72. Jesus tells them the harvest is abundant but the workers are few. He sends them as lambs among wolves, tells them to travel light, to speak peace into every home, to heal the sick, and to announce that the kingdom of God has come near. The Greek phrase basileia tou theou, the kingdom of God, is the dominant theme of Jesus’s preaching in the four gospels. It is not a place you visit when you die. It is the reign of King Jesus breaking into the world now.
Justin walks the kingdom through three movements. Reigning now means all authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Jesus, and your daily allegiance runs through him before any other flag, family, or paycheck. Reaching through us means every believer is enlisted as a worker, with a new lifestyle shaped by the Sermon on the Mount and a new mission to make Christ known in vocation, family, and neighborhood. Returning soon means the work is urgent, there are no zero days in the kingdom, and there is no retirement plan for a disciple of Jesus.
The pastoral takeaway is honest. Comfort is the great threat to the church in northwest Arvada, and to your soul. Brother Andrew smuggled Bibles into the Soviet Union in a blue Volkswagen and said anyone could do what he did if they were willing to put their life on the line. The question is not whether you are gifted enough or extroverted enough or ready enough. The question is whether you will move from consumer to commissioned. Heaven crowded. Hell less so. That is the kingdom we are praying for.

Go deeper with this message all week.
Seven days of Scripture, reflection, and prayer drawn from this sermon. One a day. Read it in five minutes. Carry it the rest of the day.
DAY 1
The Kingdom Is Reigning Now
Matthew 28:18
Jesus opens the Great Commission with a claim about ownership. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. There is no neutral ground, no patch of your life he does not already rule. The relief in this is that the one who owns it all is also your Father. Live today like the King is actually on his throne.
Prayer
King Jesus, I surrender every corner of my life to your reign today.
DAY 2
The Harvest Is Abundant
Luke 10:2
Jesus does not say the harvest is uncertain or thin. He says it is abundant. The bottleneck is not interest from the lost. The bottleneck is workers willing to go. Before you ask God to send someone else, ask him to send you.
Prayer
Lord of the harvest, send me into the fields you have already prepared.
DAY 3
You Have a New Family
Galatians 3:28-29
If you are in Christ, you have more in common with a believer in Uganda than with the neighbor who looks just like you but does not know Jesus. The kingdom rewires your loyalties. Blood of Christ runs thicker than blood of family. Live like the church is your first family, not your backup plan.
Prayer
Father, give me eyes to see my brothers and sisters in Christ around the world and across the street.
DAY 4
Your Uniform Is Christlike Character
Galatians 5:22-23
Soldiers in the kingdom wear love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. That is the uniform people see before they hear a word of your message. If the fruit is missing, the words will not land. Ask the Spirit to grow what cannot be faked.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, grow your fruit in me so that my life preaches before my mouth opens.
DAY 5
No Zero Days
Ephesians 5:15-16
Paul says to make the most of the time because the days are evil. A zero day is one where you added nothing to the kingdom. It does not take much. A prayer for a coworker. A text to encourage a believer. A simple word about Jesus to a neighbor. Refuse the zero day.
Prayer
Lord, do not let this day pass without me adding something to your kingdom.
DAY 6
No Retirement in the Kingdom
1 Corinthians 15:58
Paul tells the Corinthians to be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, because your labor in him is not in vain. You may retire from your job. You do not retire from the mission. The finish line is the throne, not the pension.
Prayer
Father, keep me working in your fields until you call me home.
DAY 7
Every Door Is Open
Colossians 4:3
Brother Andrew said every door is open to proclaim Christ as long as you are willing to go and not be worried about coming back. The doors are already open. The hesitation is in your heart, not in the world around you. Pray for boldness, then walk through one door today.
Prayer
King Jesus, make me unafraid to walk through the doors you have already opened.
For your small group, family, or personal reflection.
- When you heard the coffee shop story, what part of your life or your church did it expose?
- Justin defined the kingdom of God as King Jesus reigning now, reaching through us, and returning in full. Which of those three is hardest for you to live in this week?
- Where in your daily life are you living as if you, not Jesus, are the one in charge?
- Who is one person in your circle that does not know Christ, and what would it look like to take a real step toward them this week?
- What does moving from consumer to commissioned look like for you specifically? Be concrete.
- Brother Andrew said anyone could do what he did if they were willing to put their life on the line. What comfort are you holding onto that is keeping you from a fully commissioned life?
- What would change in your home, your vocation, and your week if you really believed there is no retirement in the kingdom?
