Marriage Is a Covenant
Most people walk into marriage thinking of it as a contract. The Bible calls it something heavier. This message unpacks what Genesis 2 actually says about God’s design for marriage and why it changes everything.
Marriage Is Not a Contract. It Is a Covenant.
You can sign a contract in a conference room. A covenant takes a ceremony. Most marriages today are stuck in the contract mindset, where the deal holds as long as both parties feel it is working. Genesis 2 frames marriage as something heavier and more sacred. Valor Church is an expository, Bible-teaching church in northwest Arvada, Colorado, serving Westminster, Broomfield, Five Parks, and Candelas. Sundays at 10am at Excel Academy, 11500 W 84th Ave.
The text is Genesis 2:22-24. God forms the woman from the man, brings her to him, and the man says this one at last is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife and they become one flesh. Marriage is not a human invention or a social construct. It is God’s design from creation, and Jesus himself anchors his teaching on marriage in this passage in Matthew 19 and Mark 10.
Justin walks the room through two truths. First, the marriage covenant is from God and before God. It begins with vows, not the signing of a license. Second, the marriage covenant is a unifying bond. Two people leave, cleave, and become one team. That oneness shapes relational priorities, financial unity, and how decisions get made under the same roof.
The big idea lands plainly. Marriage is good. Marriage works. Marriage thrives when we do it God’s way. The closing story is Don and Darlene, 67 years in, who kept God at the center every single day. The marriage you want a decade from now is built by the choice you make today to stay in the covenant and to keep playing as one team.

Seven days of Scripture, reflection, and prayer drawn from this sermon. One a day. Read it in five minutes. Carry it the rest of the day.
DAY 1
Made by God
Genesis 2:22
Marriage is not a social construct that the state invented. God designed it in the garden before sin entered the world. That means marriage is good, marriage works, and marriage can thrive when you build it the way the Designer drew it up.
Prayer
Lord, help me see marriage the way you see it, not the way the culture has shaped me to see it.
DAY 2
Covenant, Not Contract
Malachi 2:14
A contract holds as long as both sides keep delivering. A covenant holds because of who you swore it to. Marriage is sworn before God, sealed by an oath, and meant to last when the feelings thin out.
Prayer
Lord, anchor my marriage in covenant, not in convenience.
DAY 3
Leave and Cleave
Genesis 2:24
A man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife. The old family loyalty gets reordered. A new team starts. If you are still emotionally married to mom and dad, your spouse is paying the price.
Prayer
Lord, give me the courage to leave well and cleave hard.
DAY 4
One Flesh
Mark 10:8
Jesus himself goes back to Genesis 2 when he teaches on marriage. Two become one. Not two people sharing a calendar. One unit, with one direction, under one Lord.
Prayer
Lord, make us one in mission, money, and ministry.
DAY 5
No Mavericks
Ecclesiastes 4:9
Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. A marriage where one spouse runs ahead and the other gets dragged behind is not a team. Slow your pace. Make the call together.
Prayer
Lord, kill the maverick in me. Make me a teammate.
DAY 6
Honor Marriage
Hebrews 13:4
Marriage is to be honored by all. Single, divorced, newly married, or 67 years in, you have a role in honoring this covenant. Your prayers, your encouragement, and your example matter to the marriages around you.
Prayer
Lord, show me one marriage I can honor and pray for this week.
DAY 7
Choose It Today
Joshua 24:15
Don and Darlene did not stumble into 67 years. They chose each other every single day. They kept God at the center. They laughed. They said I love you. The marriage you want a decade from now is built by the choice you make today.
Prayer
Lord, I choose my spouse today. Help me choose them again tomorrow.
