Sanctified Through Marriage

SERMON SERIES · TO BECOME ONE · WEEK 2

Sanctified Through Marriage

A wedding takes planning. A marriage takes perseverance. This message is for the couple in the thriving season and the couple in the rough one. The point of marriage is not a perfect spouse. It is a sanctified you.

God is not asking you to have a perfect marriage. He is asking you to have a sanctified marriage.
WHAT THIS SERMON IS ABOUT

Marriage Was Never Meant to Make You Happy First. It Was Meant to Make You Holy.

Most couples walk into marriage believing the goal is happiness. Then real life happens. The disappointment, the friction, the same fight on a loop. This sermon reframes what that friction is for. The point of marriage is not the absence of conflict. It is the presence of Christ shaping you through it. Valor Church is an expository, Bible-teaching church in northwest Arvada, Colorado, serving Westminster, Broomfield, Five Parks, and Candelas. Sundays at 10am at Excel Academy, 11500 W 84th Ave.

The anchor verse is Proverbs 27:17. Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another. Sharpening requires friction. That is not a flaw in the design. That is the design. Paul writes the same truth from another angle in Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3, where the husband loves his wife as Christ loved the church and both spouses put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness.

Justin works through three realities God uses to sanctify a marriage. First, the fall. Husbands drift toward passivity, wives drift toward control, and only dependence on God reverses the pull. Second, forgiveness. Where forgiveness goes missing, resentment grows. Where resentment is not dealt with, contempt sets in, and contempt is the number one predictor of divorce. Third, selfless love. Marriage stops being a battle when you realize you are not opponents. You are one body.

There is no perfect marriage. There are only marriages that are sanctifying. Do not fight back. Do not pull away. Persevere. The person across the table is not your adversary. They are God’s primary tool to make you look more like Jesus.

A 7-DAY DEVOTIONAL

Go deeper with this message all week.

Seven days of Scripture, reflection, and prayer drawn from this sermon. One a day. Read it in five minutes. Carry it the rest of the day.

DAY 1

Sanctified, Not Perfect

Philippians 1:6

God is not asking you to produce a perfect marriage. He is asking you to walk a sanctifying one. The pressure to perform comes off the moment you remember that He is the one doing the work in you. Your job is to keep showing up.

Prayer
Lord, free me from chasing a perfect marriage and lead me into a sanctified one.

DAY 2

Iron Sharpens Iron

Proverbs 27:17

Sharpening requires friction. The hard moments in your marriage are not a sign that something is broken. They are God’s chisel. The closest friendship you have is the place He uses most.

Prayer
Lord, help me see today’s friction as your sharpening, not my undoing.

DAY 3

Lead, Do Not Abdicate

Ephesians 5:25

Husbands, you are called to love your wife as Christ loved the church. That means sacrificial leadership, not silent retreat. Adam stood next to Eve and said nothing. God is asking you to step in, not step back.

Prayer
Lord, give me the courage to lead my home with sacrifice and care.

DAY 4

Trust the Design

Ephesians 5:22-24

Wives, the temptation is to steer everything because you are capable and the design feels slow. God is asking you to trust Him and trust your husband to step into what He has called him to. That is faith, not weakness.

Prayer
Lord, give me faith to trust your design even when it feels easier to take over.

DAY 5

Forgive Like You Have Been Forgiven

Ephesians 4:32

Resentment is what grows when forgiveness goes missing. Contempt is what grows when resentment is left alone. You forgive your spouse not because they earned it but because Christ forgave you of more.

Prayer
Lord, keep my accounts short with my spouse the way you keep them short with me.

DAY 6

Put On Love

Colossians 3:12-14

Paul does not say feel love. He says put it on. Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience. These are clothes you choose every morning, especially on the days you do not feel like it.

Prayer
Lord, today I choose to put on love before I put on anything else.

DAY 7

A Man Down

Philippians 2:3-5

Sometimes what looks like anger is fear. Sometimes what looks like criticism is a cry for help. Stop fighting the person across the room. They are not your opponent. They are your partner, and they may be a man down.

Prayer
Lord, help me see my spouse the way you see them, and choose them over me today.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

For your small group, family, or personal reflection.

  1. Where in your marriage have you been chasing a perfect marriage instead of a sanctified one?
  2. Husbands, where have you abdicated leadership and called it peacekeeping? What would stepping in look like this week?
  3. Wives, where has your strength tipped into control? What would it look like to give your husband room to lead?
  4. Is there an offense in your marriage you have not actually forgiven? What has grown in its place?
  5. Where is your spouse a man down right now, and how have you been responding to them as an opponent instead of a partner?
  6. Which of Paul’s clothes in Colossians 3 do you most need to put on this week: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, or patience?
  7. Single, dating, or engaged: how does seeing marriage as a tool for sanctification change what you are looking for in a spouse?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions people search for. Here are honest answers.

How to know if a church is a good church?

Look for expository preaching that lets the Bible set the agenda, a plurality of qualified elders, a clear gospel, baptism of professing believers, and a culture that does not soften hard truths to be palatable. Valor Church preaches through whole books of the Bible verse by verse and addresses real-life issues like marriage, parenting, and forgiveness from Scripture. Plan your visit and see for yourself.

What are the characteristics of a biblically-based church?

Expository preaching, qualified elders, the Bible treated as the inspired authority on every question it addresses, baptism and the Lord’s Supper practiced as Christ taught, real community where people know each other by name, and a path to grow in faith over a lifetime. Valor is built on these. We are an expository Bible-teaching church in northwest Arvada, Colorado.

How can I find a church with solid children’s biblical education programs?

Ask whether the children’s ministry teaches the actual Bible, who is leading it, and how families are supported during the week. At Valor, Valor Kids runs every Sunday with a clear discipleship pathway that lines up with what we preach to the adults. Plan your visit and bring your kids.
