The Blessed Life

Everyone wants the happy life. Almost no one knows where to find it. Jesus opens His most famous sermon with eight short sentences that flip the world’s definition upside down.

The blessed life is the life that recognizes God alone, not yourself and not anything in this world, satisfies your deepest needs now and into eternity.

WHAT THIS SERMON IS ABOUT

Not the Easy Life. The Blessed Life.

You have been sold a version of happiness that keeps moving the goalposts. More money. More followers. More comfort. A better body. A better house. A better marriage. You chase, and the line keeps backing up. Jesus opens the Sermon on the Mount with a different word. Blessed. Eight times in a row.

The Greek word translated blessed does not mean lucky and it does not mean cheerful. It points to a settled state of well-being in right standing with God. One commentator translated it as ‘white is their world,’ meaning everything that matters is in order. The Beatitudes are not a checklist of behaviors that earn that life. They are a portrait of the kind of person who already belongs to the kingdom of Jesus.

This message walks through the structure of Matthew 5:1-12 and then lands on one beatitude in particular. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Jesus offers a greater pleasure to fight a lesser pleasure. Fellowship with God is better than a three-second glance at anything this world is selling. Augustine spent thirty-two years chasing the wrong joy before he came across Romans 13 and was finally undone by a Sovereign Joy bigger than his appetites.

DAY 1

Poor in Spirit

Matthew 5:3

The kingdom belongs to the spiritually bankrupt. Not the put-together. Not the impressive. The ones who know they have nothing to bring God and stop pretending otherwise. That is the door in. Every other door is locked.

Prayer
Lord, strip me of the pretending. I need You.

DAY 2

Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

Matthew 5:4

Jesus does not promise comfort to the comfortable. He promises it to the ones who grieve their sin and grieve a broken world. Mourning is not weakness. It is the first honest response to who God is and who you are not.

Prayer
Lord, let me feel the weight of what You feel.

DAY 3

The Hungry Get Filled

Matthew 5:6

Hunger and thirst for righteousness is not a personality trait. It is a posture. The ones who crave God’s right way of doing things, His holiness, His justice, His character, are the ones He satisfies. The rest stay hungry and call it freedom.

Prayer
Lord, awaken an appetite in me that nothing else can fill.

DAY 4

Pure in Heart

Matthew 5:8

Jesus fights pleasure with pleasure. He does not say avoid lust because lust is wrong. He says the pure in heart will see God, and seeing God is the better thing. Every glance, every scroll, every secret, you are choosing between a mud pie in a slum and a holiday at the sea.

Lord, I want to see You more than I want anything else.

DAY 5

Peacemakers

Matthew 5:9

Peacemaking is not peacekeeping. Peacekeepers manage tension. Peacemakers walk into it carrying the gospel. The kind of peace Jesus makes always costs something, and it always starts at a cross before it ends at a table.

Prayer
Lord, make me brave enough to bring real peace.

DAY 6

Persecuted for Righteousness

Matthew 5:10-11

If your Christianity has never cost you anything, ask why. Jesus said the kingdom belongs to the ones the world pushes out. Not the ones the world celebrates. The reward is great in heaven. The applause down here was never the point.

Prayer
Lord, give me a spine that does not bend when the room turns.

DAY 7

Augustine’s Sovereign Joy

Romans 13:13-14

Augustine wrestled God for years while clinging to a lesser joy. Then he opened a Bible to one verse and the war ended. ‘You drove them from me, You who are the true, the sovereign joy.’ That is the testimony of every saved person. A bigger joy ran the smaller one out.

Lord, be the joy that drives every lesser joy out of me.
